South Africa Self-Drive
South Africa is the only country in Africa where I would recommend independent travel. The roads are certainly the best in Africa and signage is excellent. In addition to touring Cape Town and the Garden Route independently, you can drive to the game parks then transfer to a safari vehicle driven by a professional ranger. Self-drive will add time to your trip, but will enable you to see the countryside and meet more people. The following itinerary assumes that you will fly between the major centers and leads you on a 4-week exploration of South Africa.

Shaka Zulu was one of South Africa’s greatest warriors. Paul Kruger founded the country’s most well known national park. This itinerary will take you into Zululand, through Swaziland, the tiny country surrounded by South Africa, and into the private game reserves next to Kruger National Park. You can easily do this as a self-drive safari.
